Overview
The Course presents students with a unique opportunity to broaden their knowledge about aging and older people, their needs, the services provided for them, and the skills necessary for effective health, social and voluntary work.
The course aims to integrate and advance students’ knowledge about Social, psychological, and biological aspects of Ageing, with an update and review of developments in Policy and Service delivery.
It promotes a critical perspective on growing older and develops students’ skills and awareness of the importance of Research and Evaluation.
The course will draw on a number of disciplines (including Social Policy, Gerontology, Geography, Psychology, Nursing, Social work, etc.) to provide a well-rounded understanding of older people and benefits from participation by students from a range of different employment sectors.
Teaching and Learning
Students will come from a range of backgrounds, often with considerable experience of working with older people, and the programme will apply the principle of Adult Leaning to the Teaching Timetable, Learning Methods, and Forms of Assessment.
Students are encouraged to” build on their experience, to take responsibility for their own learning and take active participation in all aspects of the course.
A range of different methods are used including Lectures; Tutor–led Seminars, Self – directed studies, etc.
Chapters
INTRODUCTION TO GERONTOLOGY
Examination of the Ageing process from a multi-disciplinary perspective. Physical and Health factors on Ageing, Economic and Vocational factor on Ageing, Family and Community relations of older people, Social Policy and Politics of Ageing.
Throughout the course, emphasis will be placed on normal ageing.
RESEARCH METHODS IN GERONTOLOGY
This course examines research methodology applied to the field of Gerontology.
The key areas covered include: operationalizing Gerontological concept, Sampling Techniques for older populations, outcome and process evaluation of senior’s Programmes and Elementary data analysis.
SEMINAR IN APPLIED GERONTOLOGY
Discussion of current issues in applied gerontology, Interdisciplinary orientation, drawing upon resource persons from Universities and Practitioners in Nigeria and Overseas.
Course requirements include participation in a group research project.
DRUG ISSUES IN GERONTOLOGY
Considering pharmacological issues as they apply to older people, the uses and abuses of commonly prescribed and non-prescribed medication, medication reviews, government and health insurance subsidy programmes.
COUNSELLING WITH OLDER ADULTS
An examination of the ways of adapting counseling theory and practice to meet the needs of older adults and their families. Emphasis will be placed on counseling techniques and outcomes appropriate to the needs of persons ving independently, with families or in an institutional setting.
This course is restricted to students in the Gerontology Diploma Programme.
HEALTH AND ILLNESS IN LATER LIFE
An exantination of issues related to health and illness among older adits, drawing upon theories and concepts from biological, social and public health sciences. An introduction to assessment-and intervention skills useful to persons working with older adults ina broad range of practice settings.
FAMILES AND AGEING
This course “entails a ‘comprehensive interdisciplinary study of families and ageing. In addition to providing an overview of theory and research on this topic, a variety of substantive issues will be critically examined, including: families in mid lie, sibling relationships, divorce, and remartiage, dating in later ie, care giving, poverty, elder abuse and policy development.
PHYSIOLOGICAL ASPECT OF AGEING
Designed for those who require a serious but broad discussion of specific physiological aspects of ageing. The overall emphasis is on humans and other mammalian species and the varietes of ageing changes they manifest.
PSYCHOLOGY OF ADULTHOOD AND AGEING
Consider human development from young adulthood to old age. Included are theories of adult development and ageing, environmental and biological factor in ageing, and effects of ageing on sensation, perception, learning, cognition, personality, psychopathology and social relations.
SOCIOLOGY OF AGEING
This course is an examination of the structural and behavioural implications of ageing. Topics included will be: demographic aspect of ageing, the relationship of ageing to political, economic, familial and other social Institutions, and the psychological significance of ageing.
THE PRACTICUM
The Practicum is designed to ensure that students graduating from the programme
have an opportunity to work directly with older adults in a setting that promotes
their particular vocational interest.
Students are evaluated upon entrance to the programme to determine if a
practicum is required.
Individuals who have a minimum of 2-3 years of relevant work experience may
request a waiver of the practicum.

Assessment is continuous e.g. Essays and Project work and dissertation.
Dissertation in Gerontology
The Diploma includes the-requirement to undertake a Research Dissertation on a subject to be agreed with a supervisor/Lecturer from the UNIVERSITY OF TOULOUSE, FRANCE.
